IRAN
| The series of recent devastating earthquakes should be taken by all Iranians as serious warning of possibility of a big one hitting Teheran in the near future. This metropolis of 12-14 million people is sitting on two known major active faults and is surrounded by many more. Everyone, including engineering faculty members and different housing institutions agrees on the fact that between 80% and 90% of the buildings are not seismically safe. The death toll forecast in case of a major earthquake striking Teheran varies from a conservative 2 million to a more dramatic 5 million. Iran has the intellectual, economical, and political muscle to prevent this major catastrophe that would not only destroy a city but the whole country. Many of the official mitigation initiatives that have been proposed so far have faded under the pressure of an overheated construction market and a corrupt system. Time is come to face reality and to join forces to develop and execute a strategy to avoid the destruction of Teheran. |
