Istanbul: Moving 5 million
people out of Istanbul!?
Scientists expect a large scale earthquake to hit Istanbul (population: 14 million)
in the next twenty years. Scientist agree on the fact that at least 60% of Istanbul's
building stock is not earthquake safe. The discrepancy among scientists occurs
in estimating the loss of human lives in case of an earthquake: 500,000 to 4,000,000
dead! The Turkish government has chosen to ignore this.
The two times winner of the Agha Khan Award for architecture Turgut Cancever
heading a team of sixty engineers, city planners, philosophers, financiers,
and entrepreneurs are working on a plan that would move 5 million people out
